There is an urgency that pervades the paintings of Sam Reveles. The gestural accumulations, that are characteristic of his work, hold both a latent violence and tranquility embedded as spatial density and a saturation of pigment. There is a tendency to read the images as attempts to describe action that escapes portrayal due to exaggerated speed or abruptness, such as frames from a graphic novel that might convey an explosion or a brawl. These emotive clusters are formed from the aftermath of continuous and cycled markings, suggestive of the reciprocated erotic motive or a determined means of formal transformation. Here, there is an understanding of time, place, and the figure in phenomenological terms.

Sam Reveles was born in 1958 and raised in El Paso, Texas. He now lives and works in New York.

Sam Reveles is also represented by Anthony Meier Fine Arts, San Francisco and Dunn and Brown Contemporary, Dallas.
